The Martiricos Nursery School, built by José Ortega in 1929, is a building in the regionalist style and, without a doubt, a precursor of the incipient modernist movement that followed. Its current legal status is Architectural Protection 1 and, therefore, it also affects its immediate environment, that is, the Map with which it shares space. The latter, carried out in 1920 (pre-school) by the military engineer Joaquín Alfarache, is designed as an authentic stereoscopic tour of the entire national geography. Its execution lasted barely five months, involving only two auxiliaries and the soldier himself.
It is a three-dimensional design of the Peninsula (including Portugal, indicated by a dashed line) that is completed by the Balearic and Canary Islands, as well as a wide strip of North Africa that at that time was under Spanish sovereignty. Mountain ranges and mountain systems have a very powerful presence, both because of the height and volume of the peaks and because of the color applied. Added to this is the river network whose purpose is to know not only its source but also the points of mouth in the surrounding seas: the Mediterranean, Cantabrian and Atlantic surround the mainland at a slightly lower level to allow flooding from the rivers.
It is of great interest due to its history, didactic purpose, execution, dimensions and meaning. It has been restored between September and December 2023 - both in its material aspects and in the recovery of the plumbing and electricity - and this has allowed it to be given a more coherent reading and an enhancement of its original characteristics.
